A lot of us get caught up in buying every fast fashion trend only to be left feeling like we need a whole new wardrobe come the next year. This was my issue a few years ago until I started to pay more attention to my purchases and change my shopping habits. Once I did that, I really started to define my personal style and create a collection that I’m obsessed with. If this is your struggle too, try incorporating my tips to get started on your dream closet.

Step 1: Purge

Start by donating anything that doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn in a year. There’s no sense in keeping clothes that don’t do anything for you anymore.

Step 2: Get organized

Write down and categorize all of your favorite pieces on a word document and brainstorm how many outfits you can make. This might seem a little tedious but I swear it worked for me. It will help you see what’s missing in your wardrobe and what you should buy to improve it. Maybe you have too many black shoes and it’s time to try some new colors and prints.

Step 3: Shop In Outfits

Try your best to shop with an entire outfit in mind. This will help eliminate buying one off pieces that don’t fit within your style or with the rest of your closet. Whenever I see something I like while browsing, I come up with 2-3 different ways I would style it. If I can’t think of much then that means it’s probably not worth buying.

Step 4: Accessorize

If you’re starting to feel bored of your wardrobe, it’s most likely because you are wearing the same outfits over and over again without switching anything up. New handbags, shoes and jewelry will give your go-to looks a boost. This is a good short term fix to get you out of a style rut.

Step 5: Don’t Stay Comfortable

Definitely try new items that are a little out of your comfort zone. For example, if you only wear skinny jeans every day, try going for straight leg jeans or flare. You would be surprised how much of an upgrade it is to switch out the styles your most comfortable with.
